7, 1989, also in Morristown, N. Gus loved music, the gym, MMA, and boxing – he loved reading and was a very good writer – though he would not have thought so. Gus was a big man – strong and solid – tough and tall – he was very good looking – though, again, he did not see that. He was always at his best and most comfortable when able to help people. Gus loved animals, particularly birds, ducks, and dogs. He had a vibrant and unconventional sense of humor – he could take the sad, and his identification with the underdog, and weave very funny, interesting stories of his life adventures. Gus struggled with traditional academics – he graduated high school, but battled with social anxiety and depressed self-esteem and eventually began experimenting with drugs.
At some point, he began using opioid pills which, apparently, were readily available at the time. When they became more difficult to attain, the addiction turned to the next readily available substitute – Heroin. Heroin told Gus, “I can make you feel normal, worthy, even loved and accepted” – “I can make you feel nothing, take the pain away, the shame and guilt away, make everything okay. It did not tell him that it was a demon – that it affects the way your brain processes emotion – that it takes over your thoughts and desires, and ultimately, your life.
